Spend Management Strategies
Spend management data intelligence is critical for managing supply chains. Many factors play into a successful spend management strategy and the data that drives the process; it must be accurate, it must be real time, it must be normalized and in many cases it must be global.
The proper business intelligence tools include dashboards that highlight KPI’s, metrics, trends and
predictive analytics that help identify issues before the occur. The old saying goes that you can’t
manage what you don’t measure. Executives need ways to drill down into the data to analyze trends by business division, by mode, by location, etc. It must be granular.
Many supply chain executives are continually charged with lowering freight costs, which can be
challenging because it is difficult to know how you stack up with your peers. In addition, sourcing and procurement teams are always looking for ways to lower cost when request for proposals (RFP’s) are sent to potential suppliers. 

One method that has been successfully used to determine if your freight rates are in line with the market is by having them bench-marked. Pricing benchmarks are done by mode with LTL and parcel being the most common. It is important to note that benchmarks should not be based on rough estimates. 

There are many different variables that factor into a reliable benchmark but they should be driven by lots of meaningful data using precise analytics. Also, it is very important to take into account your shipping characteristics and compare them against similar profiles.
An overall spend management or sourcing strategy will address the three primary types of expenditures.
  • Procure to pay (inbound shipments)
  • Order to cash (outbound customer shipments)
  • Indirect spend (MRO, letters & documents, etc.)
